Insurance policies can be purchased by pilots for their ship, ship modifications as well as cargo. In the event of theft or destruction, the ship will be replaced and its modifications and cargo will be subsidized. Alien ships cannot be insured, however, the limited amount of Vanduul Scythes sold during the game's crowdfunding campaign are provided with Lifetime Insurance.

Insurance is only a small part of regular in-game expenses. Cargo and upgrade insurance costs are based on systems' risk levels. The insurance policy is only active in systems with a risk level equal or below what the policy covers. Any system with a risk level over 5 is uninsurable. The higher the risk level, the higher the insurance cost.
